Redis is celebrated for sub-millisecond memory performance, powering mission-critical session caches, leaderboards, and message queues. However, when backing up a 20GB Redis instance using BGSAVE, the Linux kernel relies on copy-on-write (COW) page duplication. If your server also writes the resulting 20GB dump.rdb file to the local disk while write traffic is high, memory and disk thrashing can trigger the Linux OOM (Out of Memory) Killer, crashing your Redis server.
To safeguard Redis without disk exhaustion: trigger a non-blocking BGSAVE, monitor completion via LASTSAVE, and immediately stream the resulting dump.rdb through an automated compression pipe directly into Google Drive using rclone rcat. This keeps local disk footprint minimal and archives your state offsite instantly.
