Google Drive for Desktop is essential for daily office workflows, but millions of users encounter its most dreaded fatal crash: an error popup stating "An unknown issue occurred and Google Drive needs to quit". Restarting the application immediately crashes again, locking users out of their virtual drives.
This crash occurs when Google Drive's internal SQLite database (root.db) becomes corrupted due to improper system shutdowns. To fix it without losing cloud data: quit Google Drive, delete the corrupted cache folder located at %LocalAppData%\Google\DriveFS\ (Windows) or ~/Library/Application Support/Google/DriveFS/ (macOS), and restart the application to trigger a clean database re-index.
